Chelsea Update

Chelsea is currently going through the indoctrination process at the Fort Leavenworth United States Disciplinary Barracks (USDB).  The indoctrination process lasts approximately three weeks and is designed to give a new inmate information on the facility and the opportunities available within the USDB.  Ordinarily, an inmate is not allowed to have any outside contact during the indoctrination period.  The USDB, however, made an exception for Chelsea.

Yesterday was my first opportunity to speak with Chelsea since her sentencing.  I am happy to report that she is doing very well at the USDB, and has already made several friends who accept her for who she is.  Due to going through indoctrination, Chelsea was unaware of the response to her public statement on the Today show.  During our conversation, I informed Chelsea of the overwhelming support for her decision.  I also told her about how most responsible media have elected to respect her wishes and refer to her by her new name.  Chelsea was very happy to hear of these developments.  She requested that I relay how grateful that she is for everyone's understanding and continued support.

In the coming weeks, I will go to the USDB to tour the facility and to speak with the chain of command and the medical health professionals.  It is my continued hope that we will be able to obtain hormone therapy and other necessary medical treatment for Chelsea at the USDB.  These requests address a serious medical need of Chelsea and are consistent with the general medical community's practice of adequate medical care for those with gender dysphoria

If you would like to support Chelsea by writing to her, please use the following address:

  1. I couldn't find anything on the Support Network site about what kinds of books and other enclosures she's allowed to receive.

Some info on her reading preferences, favorite snacks, etc., would also be helpful.

    Thanks!

  2. Chelsea is allowed to receive books if they come directly from the publisher or an authorized distributor. Chelsea is interested in anything that involves current events or politics. She is also interested in autobiographies. Chelsea cannot receive any food or snacks.

  3. BUSH commited war crimes and he is free to walk around, same as Obama, now we do not encarcerate those war criminals whom lack all sense of human rights besides the war crimes commited, but we do encarcerate whom exposed those crimes of war. Something is wrong, you can tell that those whom sentenced Manning are part of those war criminals. Period

    1. DAMN RIGHT. IT more less bring us back to. We have laws. But whats the point of having laws when no gov't organisation follows the law. Kind of defeats the purpose of having laws doesn't it?

Were the taxpayers here but were the ones being lied to and treated like dirt every day by the government.

  4. what would be an authorized distributor then?

    1. Amazon would be an example of an authorized distributor.

    2. Would she be able to receive clothing articles, eg a sports bra (with no wires?)

    3. No. Chelsea is not allowed to receive any clothing articles. These items much be provided by the USDB.

  5. I just looked at the July 31, 2013 Manning Defense Fund report. Am sending another $50 donation to the IOLTA/Manning trust fund to be used as Lieutenant Coombs and PFC Manning deem best. Wish I could send more.

  6. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin might be nice for Chelsea Manning to read. Is there a maximum amount of books an inmate is allowed to have at one time while at Leavenworth?

    1. Chelsea is allowed a combination of 40 books, magazines or newspapers within her cell. Anything over 40 must be discarded or donated to the USDB library. I recommend waiting until Chelsea has completed her USDB reception process (September 13th) before sending any books.

  7. David, thank you so much for the update and YOUR continued efforts to help Chelsea. I will remain a vigilant supporter for Chelsea and continue to contribute to her defense fund :) Kevin, great idea about the books!

  8. First, David, thank you for your diligent, professional, committed representation of Pvt. Manning.
Second, if you are not already familiar with Prisoner Visitation and Support (http://www.prisonervisitation.org/), it is a good group with a righteous, nonpartisan mission, and their director reminds us today that they have three visitors at Fort Leavenworth, and if Pvt Manning herself would like one of their visitors to call on her, she can request a visit from a PVS visitor, They are pre-approved and would add her to their list of prisoners to visit.

    1. Jack, I was not familiar with the Prisoner Visitation and Support group. I will definitely let Chelsea know so that she can request a visit once she completes her reception process. Thank you for alerting me to the PVSG.

    2. I know the folks who do PVS at the federal prison in El Reno, OK. They are elderly but very sweet and progressive. Motivated from their faith traditions, but do not proselytize. I suspect this is the general type who volunteer for this work. I hope that Chelsea will give it a try.

  9. I would like to know if it is possible to send clothes, handbags etc. Things with a feminine feel she could choose from. Or is she still acquired to wear uniform?

    1. Unfortunately, Chelsea would not be allowed to receive any of these items. I will have more information to provide on this topic, however, in the near future.

  11. So let me get this straight. Manning is sent to jail and has to go through all of this stuff. Its funny because mannings exposed the truth to the public, and what the gov't is really making our armies do. So shes thrown into jail.

One thing that will always stick, when your honest, or when u expose things like this to the public, things that we've never knon before. Most of us humans respect the piss out of people who do it.
Protect the whistleblowers THEY KEEP US HONEST.

This is like the Edward Snowden Incident.

Once you leak information that the gov't has been keeping secrets for many years. You get thrown into prison, and your human rights laws are completly ignored.

Why, because the law means absoulutely NOTHING to the gov't.

You may be able to stop people from proving the gov't wrong..... for a bit, but remember, humanity is evolving, and we learn more and more everyday.

You can stop 1 person, but you will NEVER EVER STOP PEOPLE from getting the information out there.

  12. So very happy she has made friends who are accepting. I feel that although her sentence is grossly unjust, at least she is not being treated badly by the other inmates and she has found those who accept her for who she is.
And thank you David for all you've done for her. Anyone can see how passionately you believe in her cause, and your continued dedication is inspiring. All the best!

  13. I too want to commend Mr. Coombs for the work he does.

  14. Thank you for taking such good care of Chelsea. You are going "above and beyond" your call of duty on this one. If there is indeed a paradise, there will be a good place for you at the Table, but for humanity sake, please take your time before you go there!

  16. Thank you to everyone for expressing your support and concern for Chelsea. I also want to thank you for your words of encouragement and support for me. It truly means a lot.

  17. If Chelsea Manning has shown us anything it is that the core of survival for the individual is in the power of compassion and not in the power of sheer force! I highly recommend her (and you) for applying these universal principles in such an elegant way.

  18. Can we send money via money order directly to Pvt Manning's commissary account at Leavenworth?

    Replies
    1. Yes you can. It must be a money order and must be made out to PVT Manning.

  19. Chelsea Manning is ONE of the most mentally strong people i know. 99.99 percent of others would have went totally insane or just committed suicide. To endure the punishment which was invoked upon her, shows tremendous intestinal fortitude, and a desire to LIVE!!!.

  20. Thank you so much for this update. You are a hero in your own right, thank you for your service and continued bravery in defending Chelsea.

  21. The government that prosecuted this young, impressionable, and honorable youth is the most psychotic genocidal mass murderer in history. Pvt Manning should be free as long as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Obama, Holder, Wolfowicz, Greenspan, and Bernanke are free to walk the streets.

    ReplyDelete
  22. An overwhelming support is really good for her, also I'd like to see her free, walking on the streets like anyone else because she's got every right to a beautiful life.
In other words, she deserves her freedom as a human being...

  23. Obviously not in the very near future, but do you think someday Chelsea might be able to receive visitors? If I ever took a roadtrip across the U.S. I would feel very privileged to have the chance to give her a big hug and tell her how much I appreciate her, as a compassionate and courageous human being, not simply as a brave whistleblower but as a persyn who has had to face many hardships and CHOSE to walk a difficult path in order to do right by other human beings and then once again in order to do right by herself. She represents the best of the human spirit. Thank you Chelsea Manning and thank you David Coombs!

    1. Thank you for you support of Chelsea. Unfortunately, Chelsea can only add visitors that she is either related to or that she knew prior to going into incarceration.
